Every holiday season, the debate over “unexpected Christmas movies” surfaces—cue *Die Hard*. But I’m here to shift the spotlight onto a few often-overlooked gems that embody the frosty magic of the season in their own unique way. These movies capture the essence of Christmas while delivering something extra. 

1. Edward Scissorhands

Beautiful, poetic, and utterly heartbreaking—this Tim Burton classic has been making me cry since 1998. Johnny Depp’s performance as the gentle, misunderstood Edward is nothing short of extraordinary. If there were any justice, he’d have an armful of awards for this role. Beneath its quirky exterior lies a tale of love, loss, and finding beauty in the unconventional—a perfect fit for the season.  I would like to add on how frustrating it is that Kim left Edward alone post movie. But I guess that’s what makes the movie so beautiful because Edward is still up there making it snow.

2. Batman Returns

Everyone argues that Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Let’s settle this: it’s not. But you know what is? Batman Returns. This movie delivers a moody, snow-draped Gotham that oozes Christmas. It’s the ultimate Christmas action movie, blending Tim Burton’s darkly gothic style with all the holiday trimmings. If you’re craving some yuletide chaos with a side of Penguin, Catwoman, Max Shrek and a lot of latex this is your perfect fix. 

3. Miracle on 34th Street (1994 Remake) 

I just rewatched this last night, and let me tell you—it’s the Christmas movie of all Christmas movies. Forget White Christmas or Christmas Vacation; this one has heart, charm, and that warm 1990’s “everything-will-be-okay” glow. It’s the epitome of what the holiday season is all about: believing in magic, kindness, and the spirit of giving.  Plus, It was in the era of corporate greed and corporate fat cats being villains which is always delightful because it’s utterly cheesy and harmless in the end.


These films might not make everyone’s Christmas list, but they embody the season’s magic in unique and memorable ways. So, grab some cocoa, dim the lights, and give these holiday treasures another watch. You won’t regret it!
