I saw Toy Story 5 with my kiddo. While it still showcases the creativity that Andrew Stanton wields, the central theme of technology replacing childhood imagination feels like well-worn territory for parents. The film’s message is unfortunately a sad reality, but creatively the story feels like it’s running on empty batteries. The plot is borderline repetitive and unfolds in ways that are largely expected. The laughs are fewer this time around, and some of the new ideas involving the toys in the human world feel underdeveloped. The biggest disappointment, though, was the Buzz Lightyear storyline. It starts with a genuinely exciting premise, but I found myself wishing the movie had focused much more on that instead. That said, it’s not a bad movie. Toy Story still has an undeniable charm, and spending time with these characters is always enjoyable. It just doesn’t reach the emotional or creative heights of the earlier films.Rating: 3 out of 5.
